Can Vapes Go In Hand-Luggage?

If you're getting ready to jet off and wondering whether you can bring your vape along in your hand luggage, you're not alone. It’s one of the most common questions we get asked – and it makes sense. No one wants to have their kit confiscated at security or risk running into problems mid-flight. But don’t stress it - you can bring your vape on the plane; there are just a few things to know before you pack.

At Superior Vapour, we’ve helped countless vapers prepare for travel, and we know exactly what’s allowed, what’s risky and how to fly stress-free with your vape gear. So let’s walk through everything you need to know.

Can I Pack My Vape in Hand Luggage?

Yes – and in fact, you must. Most airports and airlines require that vape devices travel in your hand luggage, not in checked baggage. That’s because almost all vapes use lithium-ion batteries, and those batteries aren’t allowed in the aircraft hold due to fire risk.

As a rule of thumb, keep your vape kit with you at all times during your journey. Make sure it’s switched off before you board, and don’t be tempted to charge it during the flight – airlines strictly prohibit that too.

We always recommend storing your vape in a small case or pouch for easy access during security checks. It keeps everything together, avoids damage, and helps you move through the airport without hassle.

What About E-Liquids?

When it comes to e-liquid, the same rules apply as with any other liquid in hand luggage. You’ll need to stick to bottles that are 100ml or smaller, and all of them must fit into a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag. The total volume of all your liquids combined should not exceed one litre.

At security, you’ll need to take this bag out of your hand luggage and place it in the tray – just like with toiletries. So it’s worth having it easily accessible.

If you’re travelling for a longer period and need more e-liquid, you can place additional bottles in your checked luggage. Just be cautious: the changes in pressure and temperature in the hold can cause some bottles to leak. We’d suggest double-bagging them or using leak-resistant containers just to be safe.

Battery Safety and What You Need to Know

We take battery safety seriously – and airlines do too. If you’re travelling with a vape that uses built-in batteries, you’re good to go as long as it stays in your hand luggage. If you carry spares – for example, 18650 batteries for a more advanced mod – they must be kept in protective cases and stored in your carry-on. Loose batteries are not allowed in checked baggage under any circumstances.

The aim here is simple: avoid any possibility of short circuits. If a battery were to come into contact with metal objects, like keys or coins, it could cause a fire. A simple plastic battery case solves that issue completely and is a must for any vaper who travels with spares.

Can You Vape in the Airport or on the Plane?

In short, no. Vaping is banned on all commercial flights and is usually restricted in airport terminals too. We understand it can be frustrating, especially on a long trip, but the penalties for vaping where it’s not allowed can be serious – including fines or even being removed from the flight.

We recommend checking your airport's smoking and vaping policies before you travel. If there’s a designated area outside before security, that’s your best chance for a quick vape before flying. Once you’re past security, you’ll likely need to wait until you arrive at your destination.

Our Advice for Flying with Your Vape Kit

From years of experience helping our customers travel with their vape gear, we’ve learned a few tips that make the whole process smoother. First and foremost, choose a compact, travel-friendly device. Smaller pod kits or all-in-one systems are ideal – not just because they take up less space, but because they’re less prone to leaking or accidental activation.

It’s also wise to empty or partially fill your tank before flying. Cabin pressure can cause full tanks to leak, which is a hassle no one wants mid-flight. You can always refill once you land.

We always suggest charging your device before you leave home. Since in-flight charging is off the table, a full battery gives you peace of mind, and packing a power bank (where allowed) means you won’t be left short later in your journey.

And don’t forget to be discreet. Even though your vape kit is allowed in hand luggage, it's best to keep it packed away and avoid drawing unnecessary attention.

Are Airline and Country Rules All the Same?

Unfortunately, no – and this is where things can get a little tricky. While most UK airlines follow the same guidelines around carry-on vape kits and battery safety, rules can differ slightly depending on the airline and especially the destination.

For example, some countries have strict laws against vaping – including full bans on e-liquids, devices or both. The UAE, Thailand, and some areas of India are well-known for having tough restrictions. In these cases, it’s not just about airline rules – you could face fines or confiscation on arrival.

That’s why we always encourage customers to check both their airline’s policies and the vaping laws in their destination country before travelling. A quick search or call to your airline can save a lot of stress down the line.

Flying with your vape doesn’t have to be complicated. With a bit of planning and the right kit, you can head off confident that you’ve got everything covered.
