Buyers Guide to Vape E-Liquid

How to choose your first e-liquid

Choosing an e-liquid is subjective and highly depends on your needs. We recommend you start with the following:

  • Flavour — The flavour is usually the first consideration, as all else won’t matter if you won’t use it. If you’re transitioning from smoking, some e-liquids approximate the taste of cigarettes, from tobacco to menthol. Outside the cigarette-like flavours, you’ll also find more variety like blackcurrant, peach, or strawberry and lime.
  • Nicotine strength — E-liquids have varying levels of nicotine, while some do not contain any nicotine at all. Those who are transitioning from smoking tend to purchase e-juice with some nicotine content. Note, however, that in the UK, nicotine content has to be legally limited to no more than 20mg/ml (2%). The highest level of nicotine (18 mg to 20 mg) is often preferred by heavy smokers, while 3 mg can fit light smokers or those who are already quitting smoking.
  • Propylene Glycol (PG) — This is the tasteless and colourless organic compound in e-liquids. Compared to VG, PG absorbs flavour better, can give a stronger throat hit, and produces weak vapour.
  • Vegetable Glycerol (VG) — Chemically an alcohol, VG is used in e-liquids to produce the thick vapour that is valued by some. Elsewhere, VG is used as a sugar substitute and as a thickener for medicine capsules among others.
  • The numbers on an e-liquid bottle — Typically, there are two sets of numbers on a bottle of vape juice. The first indicates the amount of nicotine per millilitre of juice (for example, 6 mg/ml). The second indicates the ratio between vegetable glycerin (VG) propylene glycol (PG) in the juice. These are the two liquids that serve as the base for the juice. Primarily, PG carries the flavour and VG makes the vapour.
  • 50/50 or 70/30 vape juice — 50/50 vape juice has both VG and PG content in equal amounts, whereas a 70/30 vape juice has more VG. As a rule of thumb, the higher the VG, the thicker the vapour. The higher the PG, the stronger the flavour. The 50/50 e-liquid will have a stronger flavour than the 70/30. By contrast, the latter will have thicker vapour than the former.

What is Shortfill e-liquid?

Shortfill e-liquid is developed to comply with the EU’s Tobacco Products Directive (TPD). Among other rules, TPD stipulates that the capacity of e-liquid bottles that contain nicotine must not exceed 10 ml and nicotine concentrations must not exceed 20 mg/ml.

To make things easier for consumers while staying in compliance with TPD, juice manufacturers who also make shortfill sell it in volumes of 50 ml inside 60 ml bottles. These convenient bottles allow users to pour in their selected 10 ml bottles of nicotine.

Shortfills are liquids that only comprise PG, VG, and flavour. They have no nicotine content. If you choose, you can add the TPD-compliant nicotine yourself, which comes in 10 ml bottles (also known as nic shots), based on the ratio you want.

Shortfills can also be used without nicotine, however many shortfill juices are made to account for the missing 10 ml, so the flavour might be harsh. If this is the case, you can add VG to taste.

How to make your vape taste even better

Flavour-chasing can be complicated as it involves looking into the components of your vape device and e-liquid. Once you figure this out, however, you’ll be able to get a more robust flavour and enhance your entire vaping experience:

  • Experiment with wattage and resistance — The easiest way to figure out the right flavour for you is to know the wattage range of your coil, and start from the lowest setting. Gradually increase it until you find the best taste for you, but stay within your e-liquid’s recommended range. Experiment with moving up or down in wattage or resistance to find the flavour that suits you best.
  • Try different flavours — Cycle through different flavours of e-liquid to prevent flavours from getting routine or stale.
  • Consider VG/PG ratio — Remember that a higher VG content can mean bigger clouds but less flavour, while higher PG can give you weaker vapour but better flavour.
  • Adjust the airflow — Airflow is important for cloud chasers but it can compromise flavour. An airflow that’s too closed, on the other hand, can produce really hot vapour. To find the balance, start low and adjust the airflow until you get the flavour that you prefer.
  • Pick the right wick and coil materials — Cotton, ceramic, and mesh wick are the most recommended materials for better flavour as opposed to the standard silica material. For the coil, Kanthal and nickel materials are most recommended.
  • Change coils — Your e-liquid will taste better with fresh coils. Many vapers change coils every time they try on different flavours, as using the same coil for two different flavours may result in an unpleasant combination of the two. If you’re also starting to get a burnt taste, it may be time to change your worn-out coil.
  • Store your e-liquid properly — Improper storage can compromise flavour. Keep your vape juice somewhere cool and dry and avoid exposure to light. It’s also best to store it inside a closet instead of a fridge.

E-Liquid FAQ

How long should a 10ml bottle of vape juice last?

It depends on how much you vape. If you’re looking to quit smoking, use your own cigarette consumption for the calculation using our estimate of 10 ml bottle equals to 100 cigarettes. For instance, if you smoke 15 sticks a day, a 10 ml bottle can last you about a week.

E-Liquids are also called e-juice or vape juice, and they’re simply the liquid that’s turned into vapour by your vaping device. Although there are countless e-Liquids out there, they generally have a base made of propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG), with nicotine and flavourings added in. E-Liquids come in different flavours, sizes, and nicotine strengths, so it’s always a unique experience! Certain types of vaping, such as sub-ohm vaping, only work with specific e-Liquids.

How long is e-juice good for?

E-liquid has a typical shelf life of one to two years. This will be indicated on your bottle. However, once you open it, exposure to oxygen will reduce this duration. An easy visual indicator is if your e-liquid has become darker.

How long can you leave e-liquid in a tank?

E-liquid in a tank is at a much higher risk of oxidation. You can leave it there for five to seven days before it will taste off. We, however, don’t recommend doing this for a prolonged period.

Why is my e-liquid turning brown in the tank?

The two most common reasons for brown e-juice are oxidation or exposure to oxygen, and caramelisation or coil gunk. When you use overly sweet juice, the risk of the sweeteners caramelising on your coil increases and that residue will spread to the rest of the tank.

Why is my vape juice turning black?

Prolonged oxidation can result in black juice. Once you fill your tank, consume the juice quickly. Another cause is prolonged and repeated caramelisation. Practise effective coil care, such as wicking. Also, clean your components regularly.

Why does my vape juice not taste?

The most common cause of a lack of taste in the vape juice is fatigue (or what’s commonly referred to as vape tongue). Cycle through different juices to keep the flavours fresh.

How often should you change vape juice?

There is no hard and fast answer to how often you should cycle. But you’ll know when the flavour doesn’t agree with you as it once did.

Why does vape juice leak?

Common causes for juice leaking are an improper seal, an overfilled tank, and faulty coils. Wrong storage may also be the cause, as many vapes are designed to be stored upright.

Can vape juice go down the drain?

Sometimes, you might not like the juice you’ve put in your tank and so you don’t want to use it or the e-liquid has expired. Pour the juice out into a large container. Dilute it first before pouring it down the drain. You can also pour it on tissue or cat litter and throw it in the bin.

Can you change vape juice without changing the coil?

You can change e-liquid flavours without changing your coil, but it’s not recommended. If the flavours conflict, the new flavour will be compromised. Use one coil and tank for sweet or fruity flavours and another for strong flavours like menthol or tobacco.

E-Liquids are also called e-juice or vape juice, and they’re simply the liquid that’s turned into vapour by your vaping device. E-Liquids come in different flavours, sizes, and nicotine strengths, so it’s always a unique experience! Certain types of vaping, such as sub-ohm vaping, only work with specific e-Liquids.

Can any e-liquid go in any e-cig?

Yes. However, certain e-liquids will perform better in certain vape devices. If you’re concerned with coil longevity, for instance, e-liquids with high sweetener content accelerate coils getting burnt out.

E-Liquids are also called e-juice or vape juice, and they’re simply the liquid that’s turned into vapour by your vaping device. What ohm and wattage are best for 70/30 juice?

Bigger and thicker vapour comes from high wattage. Check your coil’s wattage range, start from the median, and work your way up.

A sub-ohm tank is a good fit for 70/30 juice. A lower VG ratio will result in harshness.

Is lower ohms better for vaping?

Your choice of resistance, measured in ohms, depends on what you want in a vape. Generally, lower ohms means hotter, more vapour, and a stronger throat hit. Higher ohms will do the opposite.

Why do some e juices burn coils faster?

The rule of thumb is that the sweeter the e-liquid, the faster it will burn your coil. This is due to the sweetener caramelising on the coil, preventing the coil from wicking.
